Old Trail Town and the Outlaw Cabins
Near Cody, Wyoming
On the western edge of Cody, at the site of the original Cody City, stands a collection of frontier buildings that would otherwise have vanished. Old Trail Town is the work of one determined man, Bob Edgar, an archaeologist and preservationist. Edgar noticed that the West's old log buildings kept disappearing, torn down, burned, or left to rot, so he began saving them.
He opened Old Trail Town in nineteen sixty seven with five buildings, and over the years he and his friends carefully took apart, moved, and rebuilt twenty eight historic structures here, each one dating between eighteen seventy nine and nineteen oh one. Among them is a cabin from the Hole in the Wall country, a known hideout and rendezvous for Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, and other outlaws. There is a saloon frequented by Cassidy's gang, and there are the graves of famous Western figures, including the mountain man John Johnston, whose life inspired the Robert Redford film Jeremiah Johnson.
It is not a reconstruction or a theme park. Every log here once stood somewhere real.
