Daniel White and the Wayside Inn
Alabama
Out here near Elgin once stood the Wayside Inn, run by a North Carolina man named Daniel White. He is said to have bought this land around the time Alabama became a state, when this country was still a frontier of stagecoach roads and river crossings. His home was a large two story log house on the north side of the old highway, and it doubled as a stagecoach stop, a place where travelers could rest, eat, and water their horses before pushing on.
White is said to have set aside land nearby for a church and burial ground. Daniel White and his wife, Margaret, are believed to be buried there, along with a son, Sherwood, who ran a grist mill on Second Creek. The inn is long gone, but the cemetery still marks the spot.
