Greater Mount Moriah Primitive Baptist Church
Alabama
This congregation has been a pillar of Black Florence since eighteen ninety-six. It first gathered in a member's home and was organized as the Fairgrounds Church, named for its place beside the old Florence racetrack and fairgrounds. Later the church moved to Irvine Avenue, a road once known as Fish Trap Road, and a member was given the honor of choosing a new name, Mount Moriah, after the holy mountain of scripture.
The congregation rebuilt, remodeled, and expanded over the decades, and later completed a Family Life Center. More than a century on, Greater Mount Moriah remains a center of worship and community.
