Delta Cultural Center: King Biscuit and the Sound of Helena

Arkansas

The Delta Cultural Center in Helena, Arkansas tells the story of eastern Arkansas and the Mississippi Delta through two floors of exhibits focused on blues music, Delta agriculture, and African American history. But the thing that makes Helena genuinely central to the blues story is a radio program. On November twenty-first, nineteen forty-one, harmonica player Sonny Boy Williamson the Second and guitarist Robert Lockwood Jr.

went live on KFFA radio for a fifteen-minute show sponsored by Interstate Grocer Company's King Biscuit Flour. They called it King Biscuit Time. It became the longest-running daily radio broadcast in American history.

Battery-powered radios carried the signal into plantation cabins and work camps across the Delta, and musicians who heard it, including a young B.B. King working the fields nearby, shaped their playing around what they heard.

King Biscuit Time aired for decades. Helena's blues festival, established in nineteen eighty-six, is one of the largest in the country.
