The Memorial to Company A, Capitol Guards
Near Little Rock, Arkansas
In Little Rock's MacArthur Park stands a bronze Confederate soldier crouched in a defensive stance, rifle pointed forward. It honors Company A, the Capitol Guards, a local militia company raised in Little Rock that went off to fight for the Confederacy. The eight-foot bronze figure, mounted on a granite column some sixteen feet tall, was sculpted by Rudolph Schwarz and installed in nineteen eleven, paid for by the local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
The park itself surrounds the old federal arsenal where, in eighteen eighty, General Douglas MacArthur was born, an officer who would fight for the Union's heirs in two world wars and Korea. The memorial reflects the era of monument-building that swept the South in the early twentieth century. It was removed from the National Register of Historic Places in twenty twenty-one.
