Bank of Suisun: The Valley's First Bank
Near Vallejo, California
The narrow brick building that once housed the Bank of Suisun was constructed in eighteen seventy-six at six oh seven Main Street and stands as one of Old Town Suisun City's most durable survivors. R. D.
Robbins and four partners filed incorporation papers that year listing capital of one hundred thousand dollars in shares of one hundred dollars each, making it the first bank to serve this farming and shipping community on Suisun Slough. Within eleven years the institution was advertising a surplus of more than one hundred twenty-seven thousand dollars and paying dividends of one percent per month to shareholders, a sign that the local grain and cattle trades were generating steady profit. The bank operated for more than fifty years before closing in nineteen twenty-seven.
The state of California designated the brick building a Point of Historic Interest in nineteen eighty-two.
