Pena Adobe: Oldest Building in Solano County

California

The Pena Adobe standing nearby is the oldest building in Vacaville and among the oldest in Solano County, raised in eighteen forty-two by Californio ranchers Juan Felipe Pena and Juan Manuel Vaca on their land grant called Rancho Los Putos. The Mexican governor had awarded the two men forty-four thousand acres along Putah Creek, and Pena built his adobe with thick mud-brick walls and hand-hewn timbers. The town of Vacaville, established just to the north in eighteen fifty-one, took its name from Vaca himself.

The city of Vacaville now preserves the adobe and the land around it as a park. It is California Historical Landmark five thirty-four.
