Will H. Buck House: Victorian Fruit Baron
California
The Queen Anne house at three oh one Buck Avenue was built in eighteen ninety-two for William H. Buck, one of Vacaville's most prominent fruit growers and packers during the orchard boom that transformed Solano County in the late nineteenth century. Local master builder George Sharpe designed the residence across two and a half stories, with redwood framing and siding, with multiple gabled roofs, turned columns, spindle work porches, and stained-glass accents throughout.
The interior is particularly noted for its Eastlake-style oak woodwork. The Buck family purchased a tract of one hundred forty-seven acres in eighteen eighty-seven, and Buck built this house as the centerpiece of a compound along the avenue that still bears his name. The National Register of Historic Places recognized it in October of nineteen eighty-five.
