Dacono, Colorado
Near Boulder, Colorado
Dacono was founded in nineteen oh one as a coal camp in southwestern Weld County, and it carries one of the more distinctive names on the Front Range. A mining executive named Charles Baum named the town by stitching together the first two letters of three women he admired: his wife Daisy and two other mine operators' wives, Cora and Nora. Da, Co, No.
Dacono. Immigrants from Greece, France, Bulgaria, and Italy came to work the seams. At its peak, the camp had its own railroad spur hauling coal to Denver.
The mines ran until the late nineteen seventies, when oil and natural gas undercut the coal economy. Today Dacono is a bedroom community for the Denver metro, but the three women's names live on in the town's name.
