Frederick, Colorado
Near Boulder, Colorado
Frederick was incorporated on December twenty-sixth, nineteen oh seven, and named by three daughters for their father, Frederick A. Clark, who owned the land the town was built on. Coal had been the reason anyone came here at all.
The Frederick Coal Mine drew immigrants from Italy, France, Greece, Turkey, and several Slavic countries, who built a community in the coal seam country of southwestern Weld County. At its height the town supported multiple nationalities under one company structure, which was common in the Colorado coalfields. The mine closed around nineteen sixty, and for decades Frederick was a quiet crossroads.
Now it has grown into a commuter town for the Boulder and Denver corridor, its coal-camp origins visible mainly in the tight grid of its oldest blocks and the names of its founding families.
