Newburyport, Massachusetts

Near Gloucester, Massachusetts

Newburyport was incorporated in seventeen sixty-four after the shipbuilding districts of Newbury voted to split off on their own. By the seventeen nineties it was one of the wealthiest per-capita cities in New England, its Federal-style mansions lining High Street built on merchant shipping and the clipper-ship trade. The United States Coast Guard traces its origins to Alexander Hamilton's Revenue Cutter Service, established in seventeen ninety, whose first ten cutters were built in ports along the Atlantic coast. The abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison was born here in seventeen oh five and launched The Liberator newspaper in Boston.
