Seabrook, New Hampshire
New Hampshire
Seabrook sits at the southern tip of New Hampshire's eighteen-mile coastline, the shortest ocean frontage of any Atlantic seaboard state. Settled in the sixteen hundreds as part of Hampton, it incorporated separately in seventeen sixty-eight. The town became nationally known in the nineteen seventies and eighties for the Seabrook Station nuclear power plant, whose construction sparked one of the largest anti-nuclear protests in American history.
At the start of May in nineteen seventy-seven, nearly fourteen hundred protesters were arrested in a single civil disobedience action organized by the Clamshell Alliance. The plant eventually opened in nineteen ninety, and it still generates about forty percent of New Hampshire's electricity today.
