Wellfleet: A Massachusetts Name on the Plains

Nebraska

The village of Wellfleet, Nebraska, carries a name borrowed from Massachusetts. When the railroad pushed through southwest Nebraska in the eighteen eighties, the new townsite was named after Wellfleet, on Cape Cod. The town was formally established in eighteen eighty-seven.

Like dozens of small Nebraska villages, Wellfleet peaked during the homestead era and then contracted as farms consolidated and highways bypassed country depots. Today fewer than one hundred people remain, but the Cape Cod name has outlasted the ambitions that placed it here, a small Atlantic whisper carried far inland across the Republican River country.
