Cygnet, Ohio

Ohio

In eighteen eighty-five, Wood County, Ohio was farmland. Then the oil derricks went up. Crews drilling in Bloom Township struck a major pool that set off one of the wildest short-lived booms in Ohio history.

Workers arrived by the hundreds. Saloons, boarding houses, and rough commerce followed. The village, first platted as Pleasant View in eighteen eighty-three, took the name Cygnet, which means a young swan, though accounts are vague about exactly why.

The Ohio oil rush burned fast. Within a decade, production was already declining, and Wood County went back to being farm country. Cygnet itself never grew beyond a small village.

It is still here, surrounded by flat northwest Ohio fields, a quiet remnant of the day the earth gave up oil beneath the corn.
