Pemberville Town Hall and Opera House

Near Toledo, Ohio

When oil money swept through northwestern Ohio in the eighteen eighties and nineties, small towns built big. Pemberville answered the boom in eighteen ninety-one with a handsome brick Town Hall that did triple duty: city offices and jail on the ground floor, a fire station tucked alongside, and a full two-hundred-fifty-seat Opera House upstairs. For decades it was the social center of Wood County, hosting traveling performers, community dances, and civic meetings.

After World War Two the building fell quiet and into disrepair, but the community refused to let it go. A restoration effort completed in nineteen ninety-nine brought the hall back to life, and today it still hosts events in the same room where oilfield workers once watched vaudeville shows.
