Brookville: Pennsylvania's Jefferson County Seat
Pennsylvania
Brookville sits at the confluence of Sandy Lick Creek and Mill Creek in western Pennsylvania, and it has been Jefferson County's seat since eighteen thirty, the year the state legislature chose it and surveyors laid out the grid. The first settlers arrived in seventeen ninety-six. When the county seat was formalized, lots were sold to start the new town, and it filled in quickly. Brookville grew up fast on lumber and county business, a pattern repeated in dozens of Pennsylvania mountain towns carved from the wilderness in the early republic.
