Fishbasket: A Shawnee Town on Redbank Creek

Pennsylvania

Near the mouth of Town Run on Redbank Creek, a Shawnee village once flourished that European settlers came to call Fishbasket, named for the extraordinary abundance of fish that gathered in these waters. The village stood at a crossroads of at least two major Indigenous travel paths, the Frankstown to Venango route and the Punxsutawney to Venango path, making it a natural gathering and trading place.

Archaeological investigations have revealed that the area was occupied even before the Shawnee settlement, with prehistoric fortified villages discovered in the vicinity. The Shawnee presence here in the late eighteenth century was part of a larger pattern of Indigenous communities along Pennsylvania's river systems, communities that maintained complex trade and diplomatic networks long before European contact and continued to do so until they were pushed westward by colonial expansion.
