Strattanville, Pennsylvania: Oldest Town in Clarion County

Pennsylvania

Strattanville lays claim to being the oldest town in Clarion County, though Clarion County itself did not exist yet when the town was founded. John Strattan, an immigrant from Haddonfield, New Jersey, purchased land in the area in eighteen twenty-six and laid out the village plan in eighteen twenty-eight, placing it on a ridge two miles south of the Clarion River. At the time, the land was still part of Armstrong County.

Clarion County was not carved out until eighteen thirty-nine, eleven years after Strattanville's founding. The borough incorporated in eighteen fifty. Once considered a possible county seat, it remained a quiet ridge-top village instead, today home to about five hundred forty residents among the wooded hills of northwestern Pennsylvania.
