Flora Black and the Society of Farm Women
Pennsylvania
On this farm in nineteen fourteen, a woman named Flora Black gathered a group of neighbors and founded the Society of Farm Women of Pennsylvania. Black was a civic leader already active across the county and Commonwealth, and she understood that farm women, despite their central role in rural life, lacked any organized voice for their interests. The Society she created that day grew into a statewide network, with affiliates in counties across Pennsylvania, advocating for better conditions in farm homes and a stronger role for women in agricultural life.
She lived here until her death. The organization she founded that October afternoon outlasted her by decades.
