Hulmeville: Where Bucks County Banking Began
Near Trenton, Pennsylvania
Hulmeville sits on the Neshaminy Creek in Bucks County, one of Pennsylvania's smallest boroughs. The land was originally sold by William Penn in the sixteen eighties, and around seventeen twenty the first dam was built across the creek here to power a grist mill. The settlement stayed small until John Hulme arrived in the seventeen nineties, built an inn and a store, and in eighteen fourteen opened the Farmers National Bank, the first banking institution in all of Bucks County.
Hulme got the town a post office in eighteen nine, and the town later took his name. The borough was formally incorporated in eighteen seventy-two and has stayed largely unchanged ever since, a quiet creek-side village that holds the modest distinction of being where money first became official business in this corner of Pennsylvania.
