Revolutionary War Burial Site
Near Trenton, Pennsylvania
After the two Battles of Trenton in December of seventeen seventy-six and January of seventeen seventy-seven, Washington's troops used hospital buildings in this village, then known as Four Lanes End. Soldiers who died from wounds or from disease during the brutal winter were buried here. Written accounts suggested that many men were interred.
For more than two centuries the site was largely forgotten. Then archaeological excavations confirmed what the old records had described: a burial ground does exist here. It is one of the quiet remnants of the American Revolution, the place where ordinary soldiers who helped turn the tide of the war were laid to rest.
