Langhorne Speedway: The Big Left Turn
Near Trenton, Pennsylvania
Just down the road stood one of American motorsport's most legendary tracks. Langhorne Speedway opened in nineteen twenty-six as a circular one-mile dirt oval, earning the nickname the Big Left Turn because drivers never straightened the wheel for the entire lap. NASCAR ran its first sanctioned race here in nineteen forty-nine, and the track drew legends like A.
J. Foyt and Mario Andretti through the years. Its National Open Championship was called the Indy of the East.
In nineteen sixty-five the track was reshaped into a D configuration and paved, and it hosted its final race in nineteen seventy-one before closing for good.
