Price's Post Office

South Carolina

Price's Post Office, near Cross Anchor in Spartanburg County, is a rare survival: a brick house from around eighteen hundred that Thomas Price ran as a store, tavern, stagecoach stop, and post office. The two-and-a-half-story building served a scattered farming community in the Carolina backcountry at a time when a local post office was the social and commercial center of rural life. Farmers brought cotton news, received letters from distant relatives, and traded goods here.

The structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and documented in the Historic American Buildings Survey. It is one of only a handful of early nineteenth century rural post office buildings surviving in the state, and offers an unusually direct glimpse of how information and commerce moved through the Carolina upcountry before the railroad arrived.
