Walnut Grove Plantation
South Carolina
Walnut Grove Plantation outside Roebuck, South Carolina, is one of the best-preserved backcountry plantations in the South. Charles Moore built the main house around seventeen sixty-five on land granted by the British Crown, and his family lived here through the American Revolution and beyond. The two-story Georgian structure still stands with its original hand-hewn framing and wide-plank floors.
During the Revolution, the property sat in the thick of the upcountry conflict: Patriot militia and Loyalist raiders both passed through Moore's lands, and family legend holds that the widow Mary Moore sheltered Patriot fighters here. Today the Spartanburg County Historical Association operates the site as an outdoor history museum, with the plantation house, a kitchen building, a doctor's office, and a schoolhouse all intact on the grounds.
