The Irish Volunteers of Charleston

South Carolina

Charleston's Irish Volunteers were among the most storied military companies in South Carolina history. The unit saw action across multiple American conflicts, serving in the War of eighteen twelve, the Florida War of eighteen thirty-five against the Seminoles, and then the Civil War, where Irish-born Charlestonians fought under multiple unit designations including Company C of the Charleston Battalion and Company K of the First South Carolina Volunteers in the Army of Northern Virginia.

Irish immigration to Charleston dated to the colonial era, and by the nineteenth century the Irish community was deeply woven into the city's commercial, religious, and military life. This memorial honors the men who served under Irish unit banners across more than half a century of American conflict.
