Hooks, Texas
Texas
The town of Hooks, Texas takes its name from Warren Hooks, a planter who arrived in Bowie County in eighteen forty-five with his family and ninety-one enslaved people. He established a five-thousand-acre plantation in the Red River bottomland, and the surrounding community carried his name from the start. Rail service arrived in eighteen seventy-six, and a post office followed in eighteen eighty-four.
By eighteen ninety the town had three churches, a school, two sawmills, a hotel, and two hundred fifty residents. Today Hooks sits on Interstate Thirty about twelve miles west of Texarkana, a small city of a few thousand people in the heart of the old plantation corridor that once defined this corner of Northeast Texas.
