Leary, Texas

Texas

Leary sits ten miles west of Texarkana along Interstate Thirty and the old St. Louis Southwestern Railway line. The town takes its name from Daniel T.

Leary, an early settler. A post office opened in eighteen ninety-four, and by nineteen fourteen the community counted about seventy-five residents. It never grew into a city, and the post office eventually closed, but Leary has held its place on the map for more than a century.

It is the kind of small East Texas community that formed around a railroad stop and a settler's name, and quietly stayed.
