The Building That Belongs to Two States at Once

Texas

There is only one federal building in the United States that sits simultaneously in two states, and you are driving past it right now. The United States Post Office and Courthouse in Texarkana straddles the exact line where Texas ends and Arkansas begins, its foundation planted in both jurisdictions at once, its two front doors opening into different states.

The building that stands here today was completed in nineteen thirty-three, but the idea goes back to eighteen seventy-three, when two railroad companies converging on the Red River region created twin towns on either side of the state line and gave them both the same hybrid name. Texarkana, Texas, and Texarkana, Arkansas, grew up facing each other across State Line Avenue, sharing an economy, a newspaper, a water system, and eventually a federal building that simply split the difference.

The original joint post office on this site opened in eighteen ninety-two, before being razed in nineteen thirty and replaced with the current Beaux-Arts structure. Its architects made the duality visible: the base is pink granite quarried in Texas, and the walls above are limestone from Arkansas. Inside, the building has long housed separate federal court jurisdictions for the two states, though in practice the clerks have always moved freely between states without noticing the line beneath their feet.

State Line Avenue itself is one of the stranger streets in America. Standing in its center, you can place one foot in Texas and one in Arkansas, and the photograph spot on the courthouse block has been luring travelers with cameras since long before anyone called it a tourist attraction. Locals have long treated the state line as an everyday quirk of life.

The courthouse is a minor monument to a very American idea: that a federal government belongs to all its territory equally, and that a building placed on a state line belongs, by definition, to both.
