Garland: The Sugar Beet Company Town
Utah
Garland, Utah was essentially built by the Utah Sugar Company in nineteen oh three. The company purchased forty acres, erected a sugar beet refinery, and built houses for its workers along Factory Street. The Oregon Short Line Railroad arrived on June sixteenth of that same year, connecting the plant to the main Union Pacific line.
Within a year, the town had fifty-seven businesses and its own newspaper. The Garland plant became part of the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company and operated until nineteen seventy-nine, producing billions of pounds of sugar from beets grown on the surrounding Box Elder County farmland. The refinery building still stands, a relic of the industry that shaped this entire Bear River Valley.
