Tremonton: Named by Accident
Utah
Tremonton was founded in nineteen oh three when three settlers, John Shuman, Fred Nihart, and John Petty, laid out a town along the Oregon Short Line's Malad branch. They chose the location partly because it sat beside the railroad and partly because the Utah Sugar Company had just built a beet processing factory a mile north in Garland. The townsite was first called Tremont, but within a few years the post office renamed it Tremonton to avoid confusion with Fremont, Utah.
By nineteen twenty the town had grown from a few hundred residents to nearly a thousand. It remains the commercial center of Box Elder County's Bear River Valley, a place that literally owes its name to a bureaucratic mix-up.
