Tremonton, Utah: The German Colony

Utah

The first settlers arrived in the Tremonton area in eighteen eighty-eight, but the Bear River Valley stayed sparsely settled until around nineteen hundred, when land agents began advertising cheap farmland to Midwesterners. Families from Nebraska and Illinois came, followed in nineteen oh one by a group of Apostolic Christians from Tremont, Illinois, mostly of German descent. People called them the German colony.

When a formal townsite was platted in nineteen oh three, the colonists asked that it be named Tremont, for the Illinois town they had left. The post office later changed it to Tremonton to avoid confusion with Fremont, Utah. By nineteen oh seven, a schism in the Apostolic Church had scattered the German colony, many moving back to the Midwest. But the name they chose stayed. Today Tremonton is one of Utah's fastest-growing cities, its population pushing toward fourteen thousand in twenty twenty-four, still carrying the name of an Illinois town that sent a short-lived colony to the desert.
