The Unknown Pioneers of Logan

Utah

In the Logan City Cemetery there is a plot set apart, marked simply for the unknown pioneers of Logan. The first Mormon settlers reached this valley in the spring of eighteen fifty-nine, arriving in several companies. The work was hard and the winters harder, and deaths began the very next year.

The settlers laid out a first burial ground close to town. Years later, as Logan grew, they decided to move the dead to higher, quieter ground at the new city cemetery. Families with names and relatives carried their own to family plots.

But many of the dead had no identification and no one left to claim them. Those nameless settlers were gathered into this single sacred plot. The Daughters of Utah Pioneers later set a stone here to honor them.
