Old Main, Utah State University
Utah
That red-brick tower on the hillside above Logan is Old Main, the oldest functioning academic building in Utah. Construction began in eighteen eighty-nine on land donated by Logan City, and on February twenty-second, eighteen ninety, the south wing was completed for what was then the Agricultural College of Utah, now Utah State University. The building cost just over twenty thousand dollars.
It was built in the Campus Gothic style by architects Charles Lawton Thompson and Karl Schaub, and its clock tower still marks the skyline of the Cache Valley. Old Main sits at the top of its namesake hill, looking west over the city it helped build, the anchor of a land-grant university that grew from a small start into an institution of tens of thousands.
