Denmark, Wisconsin
Near Green Bay, Wisconsin
The village along the highway is called Denmark, but the settlers who named it were not Belgian, not German. They were Danes, farmers who began arriving in eighteen forty-eight looking for cheap prairie land. The Chicago and Northwestern Railroad reached the area in nineteen oh six, and the village officially incorporated in nineteen fifteen.
Along with nearby Hartland, Denmark became one of the two anchor points of one of the most important Danish immigration regions in the United States. A small dot on a Wisconsin highway map, but for Danish immigrants crossing the Atlantic, it was home.
