The Northern Air Cargo DC-6

Alaska

This big propeller driven airliner is a Douglas D C six, painted in the colors of Northern Air Cargo, a company woven into Alaska's history. In a state with few roads, the airplane has always been the lifeline, hauling fuel, food, and freight to remote villages that the rest of the country reaches by truck. Northern Air Cargo, founded in nineteen fifty-six and based in Anchorage, became a long-running all cargo airline.

Its workhorse for decades was the D C six, a rugged four engine machine built in the late nineteen forties and fifties. The airline kept the D C six flying for decades. Aircraft like this one are preserved as monuments to the bush flying that built modern Alaska.
